The Museum at FIT: A Fashion Museum

As a division of the Fashion Institute of Technology and a part of the State University of New York, The Museum at FIT, founded in 1969, is a specialized fashion museum. To celebrate the museum’s 50th anniversary, in this lecture, Valerie Steele, the curator of The MFIT, will make a speech on the evolution of fashion exhibitions. Starting from how the museum initially acquired an important fashion collection of its own to how the objects displayed in fashion exhibitions varied with time and how the viewer’s ways of seeing the fashion exhibitions diversified, Valerie Steele will picture a panorama of the development of fashion exhibitions by illustrating several striking exhibitions in history including Three Women (1987), Jocks and Nerds (1989), and others.
