About the lecturer:
Born in Taiwan, Liu Yuyang received his Master in Architecture from Harvard where he coauthored with Rem Koolhaas the "Great Leap Forward", a book on the Urbanization of the Pearl River Delta, China, the content of which exhibited at the Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. Having held a number of professional and academic positions in the US and Hong Kong, he now directs his Shanghai-based Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects. His design portfolio includes the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art as one of the most important cultural institutions in China.
Liu holds an Associate Professorship at the University of Hong Kong Shanghai Center, serves as an architectural advisor for the Shanghai Qingpu District Government, and was invited as a Head Curator for the 2007 Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale on Urbanism Architecture.
About the lecture:
Since the Renaissance piazza in Italy has represented urban spaces that belong to the people. What formed these spaces are those public architecture that were closely connected to people's daily lives: cathedral, city hall, market place, museum, and college. Through an architect's unique perspective, the speaker will introduce the piazzas and architecture in a number of Central and Northern Italian towns, as well as to illustrate an urban culture that respects history, environment, art and humanity.
