Lynn Gumpert will introduce the notion of a university art museum and the experimental nature of the exhibitions that Grey Art Gallery have presented over the past 13 years.
About the lecturer:
Ms. Gumpert is director of the Grey Art Gallery where, since 1997, she oversees and develops exhibitions, educational activities, and collections. Prior to her tenure at the Grey, Ms. Gumpert served as curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City from 1980 to 1988, becoming senior curator there in 1984. From 1998 to 2007, she worked as an independent curator and consultant, organizing shows at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo, among others, and authored the first monograph on French artist Christian Boltanski (Flammarion 1992). As a consulting director for the Gallery at Takashimaya in New York (1992-95), she developed and directed the exhibition program, which was devoted to cross-cultural exchange between Japan and the U.S. At NYU's Grey Art Gallery, Ms. Gumpert has implemented an exhibition program with significant impact well beyond the university's confines. Her early curatorial work introduced contemporary Japanese art to American audiences. Her recent exhibition, The Poetics of Cloth: African Textiles / Recent Art (September-December 2008), was presented in conjunction with a show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poetics of Cloth was awarded the Best University Museum Exhibition Award for 2008 by the American branch of the International Association of Art Critics.
Ms. Gumpert received a B.A. with honors in art history from the University of California
at Berkeley and an M.A. in art history from the University of Michigan. In 1971-72 she lived in Paris, studying at the Ecole du Louvre and the Sorbonne. She has served on the boards of the International Association of Art Critics and Etant Donnés, the French-American Fund for Contemporary Art, and was a member of the Museum Advisory Committee of the Asia Society Galleries. In 1999 Ms. Gumpert was honored by the French government with the distinction of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters.Lynn Gumpert has received a one-month grant from the Asian Cultural Council to research and develop elationships with museum professionals and important cultural figures in China, Korea, and Vietnam as a first step in creating collaborative programs and exchanging exhibitions with the Grey Art Gallery, New York University's fine arts museum.
