Fiber art has developed from a single art category to a comprehensive media of modern art creation in modern art thought and perspectives. Meanwhile it has also become a new art category of human spirit, with its unique fiber structure, soft material language, soft sculpture form and application of soft end product in daily life.
The lecture will give a brief introduction about how fiber art has evolved from traditional "handcraft art" through continuous reformation and experiment since 1960s and 1970s, and how it has become a rich and characteristic art category in modern art creation. With the introduction of the background and artists, the audience can learn and understand the uniqueness of modern fiber art creation, its characteristic perspective and art language.
Lecturer: Professor Shi Hui
Shi Hui is both an artist and professor of China Academy of Art, academic director at Fiber and Spatial Art Studio. She graduated from the Art and Design Department, China Academy of Art in 1982. From 1986, she worked with Maryn Varbanov, a world-renowned fiber artist. Shi's works are characterised by the uses of cotton, hemp, rice paper, paper pulp and other fiber materials, the works emphasize on the organization of elements on the basis of modern art spirit and the quiet touches and poetic reflection of the material ,which reflect the spirit of oriental heritage at the level of contemporary art. Her works have been exhibited in many important international exhibitions
