ABSENCE——XU YI solo porject

ABSENCE——XU YI solo porject》

Opening: 2017.7.6  1900

MoCA Pavilion is proud to present ABSENCE, a solo exhibition by video artist Xu Yi starting July 6 of this year. For this event, the pavilion will be reimagined into a personal space that ushers viewers to the artist’s world of video art.

ABSENCE itself is an experimental short film portraying the inevitable cycle of birth and death. As the female body is shaped like a type of void or "absence", women are generally thought of as being carriers of sorts. In a male-dominated world and from a region that praises implicitness, there is a large “gap” in the depiction of female needs, wants, and desires. ABSENCE, therefore, sheds light on this dark island of vacancy and is a stark attempt to fill in the empty space.

For the second half of this year, MoCA Pavilion will put its focus on female artists, with hopes that this will lead to better support and care for them in the contemporary art scene.

Born in 1989 in Shanghai, Xu Yi graduated from University of California-Santa Barbara in 2012 with a B.A. in Art History. Xu’s first short stories book Indelible White (2008) was published by Shanghai Culture Press; Her short films The Seat (2014) and Absence (2015) were selected in the 38th Asian American Film Festival in New York, 20min|max International Film Festival in Germany, the 11th  & 12th China Independent Film Festival and etc. Xu currently lives and works in Shanghai, China. From fall 2017, she will start her MFA in Film Directing in Columbia University in the city of New York.
